Our Sustainable Practices

Future Kids Preschools provide plentiful, natural outdoor spaces with a lovely bright and light indoor area - a child's big backyard, a home away from home!

Future Kids was born from a dream to make a difference in Early Learning Education for Kiwi families. We provide the perfect environment where imagination can be grown and skills can be developed. With good old fashion values that encompass home grown cooked meals that have organic wholesome food included in them with our no added sugar policy - each and every day!

We strive to provide a green and sustainable home away from home in a wholesome, natural environment. With free access to the outdoors to run and play in the fresh air, the children have the freedom to express themselves and will be loved and supported for who they are.

Orchard

Our centre has a fruit orchard with many varieties of organic fruit for the children to pick and eat including apples, Nashi, feijoas, peaches, plums, oranges, lemons, Raspberries and mandarins. Our fences are lined with grape vines and hedges made from fruit trees as part of our vision to have an edible garden. Each room as its own raised-bed gardens in which we grow organic vegetables, herbs and of course fresh strawberries. All of the produce grown will be eaten by the children, with any excess produce offered to our families or used as part of fundraising activities.

Organic menu

Offering organic wholefood choices with a zero sugar policy.  Not only are our organic menus delicious, but they fuel your child with the proper nutrition.  Providing your child with optimal health and wellness.

Animals

Our centres  are also home to our family of animals, chickens, rabbits, guinea pig, Kunekune pig, beehives and a worm farm. Daily activities for the children at the centre include handling and feeding animals, and collecting food waste from meals to feed the chickens and worm-farms. This interaction encourages children to learn about sustainability and the way nature relates to their daily lives.

Eco-friendly cleaning products

Our centres use eco-friendly cleaning products which provide a non-toxic environment

Recycling

We are strongly focused on recycling all waste in our centre with purpose built recycling centres in each room for organic food waste, soft plastics, hard plastics and cardboard.

Solar panels

Our centre has solar energy panels which store the sun’s natural energy, providing a renewable source of energy to the centre.   There are no direct greenhouse gas emissions because the electricity is made from direct sunlight rather than burning fossil fuels.

Rainwater harvesting

We have two large rainwater tanks that gather rainwater from the roof then we feed it back to the gardens and orchard.

Purified water

Our centre has HRV water filters installed.  This reduces sediment, chlorine and other contaminants,  delivering clean filtered water from every tap.

Wooden furniture

Our centres are fitted with local New Zealand made high quality non toxic wood furniture with an emphasis on beauty, functionality, and environmental awareness.

Our Programme

Our programme at Future Kids is based on the New Zealand early childhood education curriculum called Te Whariki.

Future Kids is committed to providing a programme that balances the interests of the child together with the aspirations of both the parents and teachers. Our programme is varied and flexible on a day to day basis, developing the curiosities of children. We offer a range of learning opportunities within our sustainable environment to engage tamariki in a well-resourced, creative and inspiring environment.

Keleigh-Ann Hendricks
Team Leader

Kia Ora koutou,

My name is Keleigh-Ann Hendricks and I am in my third year of studying towards my Bachelors of Teaching in Early childhood. I have been residing in New Zealand since 2015, immigrating from South Africa. You’ll find me to be a bubbly and friendly individual, always keen for a chat! My hobbies and interests are currently based on outdoor activities, I really enjoy exploring New Zealand’s beautiful back yard and take every opportunity I can to do so. I also thoroughly enjoy cooking, baking, and spending quality time with my whānau.

I am big on family involvement and really enjoy getting to know each child and their whānau, viewing this as crucial when it comes to children’s learning and development.

My passion for early childhood started at a young age, always being the big sister and babysitter in the family. As I grew up and learnt more about this field, it only strengthened my passion. I strongly believe that respectful and reciprocal relationships with whānau, tamariki, and staff is what creates a successful and meaningful learning environment for children to thrive in. My philosophy is strongly centred around seeing children as confident and competent learners. I believe children should experience an environment that is rich in learning and supports their holistic development.

I am super grateful to be a part of the Future Kids family! I am looking forward to building meaningful relationships with all these amazing tamariki, offering them opportunities to learn and develop across all domains. I will ensure that I always support their curiosity and encourage their creativity, inspiring a love for learning!

I portray a passion for building strong relationships with each tamaiti and their whanau and value maintaining these relationships through my interactions and with open communication. I am very passionate about supporting ngā kaiako capabilities within their practice therefore ensuring best learning outcomes for tamariki.

I have 2 fur-babies, Oscar and Marley who keep me on my toes and have encouraged me to embrace my love of animals. We enjoy exploring the lovely Taranaki walkways, beaches and parks in our spare time.

I am looking forward to getting to know the tamariki and their whānau during my time at Future Kids Bell Block.

Carla williams
Chef

Hello to the Future Kids family. My name is Carla Williams and it is a delight to be apart of the team as your Cook. I have spent the majority of my 47 years living in Bell Block. I love the connection between the Future Kids philosophy and my home life. Graham, our daughter Tenisha, and I have spent the last 18 years living on an Orchard creating our own sustainable future.
I have been employed in an Early Childhood Centre for 23 years. The first part as an unregistered teacher and then Cook. I have had regular training in safe and hygienic food preparation. I have learnt healthy meal ideas from many educated people over the years, for example, heart foundation educators, dieticians, diabetes nurses, plus following the Ministry of Education Guidelines. As a Cook I intend to always be learning, adjusting, and achieving your childrens’ nutritional goals.
I sincerely enjoy nourishing and educating our tamariki with kai . To most, it’s a source of comfort and contentment, which will always be served with smile.

Kimberly Cossey

Kia Ora! I’m Kim.
I’m beyond excited to be apart of the Future Kids whanau. I have enjoyed every last minute I have spent working alongside the children and staff members here.
I always knew growing up I wanted to work with children in some way. I began studying to become a paediatric nurse but discovered I wanted to be able to educate and nurture our children and switched career path. In 2021 I gained my certificate in Early Childhood education and education support. 2022 I began my journey of gaining my Bachelor of Early Childhood Education.
I was born and raised in Taranaki on our family farm. I believe this is why I value the outdoors, messy and imaginative play with the learning experiences and adventures it can provide. In my spare time, I love to get out and be active, but also spend quality time with my family and friends.

Jessica Henderson
Team Leader

Kia Ora I’m Jessica.

I have had the privilege of caring for young children and working as an early childhood educator since 2005. I have been married for 12 years to my wonderful husband Garnett and we have 2 amazing children Samuel aged 9 and Katie aged 7. My family and I enjoy getting out and about, working on our lifestyle bock and attending church, school, community and family events and functions.

I am passionate about contributing to the intellectual, social, emotional, spiritual and physical learning and development of young children. I have a creative, down to earth, warm and nurturing personality and am a strong believer in the value of team collaboration, open communication and the importance of establishing respectful relationships with children, their families and their community.

I began my teaching journey in Tasmania Australia, which is where I was born and raised. After gaining a Batcherlor of Education (primary) in December 2002 I moved to New Zealand in January 2003. I decided to continue my studies, which lead me on another journey of working in the early childhood industry. In 2006 I gained a Graduate Diploma of Teaching and Leaning (ECE) and I found my true calling and love of working with young tamariki.

As we begin this new journey, I look forward to getting to know and working alongside all the teachers, support staff, families and our Future Kids community.

Nicola Cox
Team Leader - on leave

Kia ora koutou!

My name is Nicola Cox and I am so pleased to be joining the Future Kids team. I have watched the place develop from an empty site into a buzzing little community a year or so later and now I will get to spend my time here with an exciting group of people - big and small!

I trained as an Early Childhood Teacher 5 years ago and am now fully registered with four years’ experience. The decision to retrain was an easy one as it was a return for me to a time I loved when my own children were preschoolers. It has been a successful and fun path and a journey I am keen to continue with Future Kids.

I like to interweave my interests with my work and for me this is family, young children, the outdoors, reading and cycling. As a Bell Block resident there is no excuse for me to not bike to work and I am really looking forward to this. I have been in Bell Block now for 21 years and married to David for 20 years. My daughter Emma is also an ECE Teacher and my son Nathan is studying computing at Waikato.

I love watching and being a part of new relationships as tamariki and kaiako become familiar to each other and come to really know, trust, and enjoy each other. I love being alongside families as they and their children learn and grow so I look forward to journeying with you through this stage of your lives.

Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Teaching with NZTC, where I am a second-year student. This program has provided me with valuable knowledge and insights into the best practices for fostering early learning and development.

Originally hailing from the beautiful islands of Fiji, I have called Auckland home for the past 15 years. However, my family and I decided to relocate to the breathtaking Taranaki region five years ago, captivated by its serene beauty and close-knit community.

Their presence has taught me the importance of understanding and appreciating each child's unique journey. I firmly believe that every child learns at their own pace and possesses incredible potential waiting to be unlocked.

As an educator, my goal is to create a nurturing and stimulating environment that encourages children to embrace their curiosity, explore their interests, and reach important developmental milestones. I am committed to providing individualized support and guidance to each child, fostering their self-confidence, and helping them thrive. By fostering a warm and inclusive classroom environment, I aim to empower children to become confident, lifelong learners.

I am passionate about partnering with families, recognizing their vital role in their child's education. By maintaining open lines of communication, I ensure that parents feel informed, valued, and included in their child's learning journey.

In my spare time, I enjoy exploring the natural beauty of Taranaki with my family.
